The Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire will welcome HRH The Earl of Wessex to the county next week, for a visit that will officially start the county's diamond jubilee celebrations.
The Prince will carry out five engagements over the two days, including planting an oak tree at St. Margaret's Church of England Primary School, Hornby, on Tuesday, 7 February, to mark the official start of the county's diamond jubilee celebrations.
Prior to that, on Monday 6 February - Accession Day, 60 years to the day since The Queen acceded to the throne - the Prince will officially open Lancashire House, in Accrington. The purpose-built Lancashire County Council offices, next to the Globe Centre in Accrington, house the council's Customer Service Centre, run by One Connect Ltd.
The Lancashire Lieutenancy Office has also announced two key opportunities for communities to be part of the The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations this year. Taking place on Sunday 3rd June will be 'The Big Jubilee Lunch' where people are encouraged to share lunch with neighbours and friends and on Monday 4th June a network of 2,012 Queens Diamond Jubilee Beacons will be lit across the UK, with Lancashire urged to play an important role.
Whether it's a traditional street party, a village celebration or a themed picnic, small and larger groups alike are urged to organise an event around the 'Big Lunch' and, if wished, raise some funds for a local charity in the process. The aim is to encourage as many people as possible to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee on 3rd June by having lunch with their neighbours for a few hours of community, friendship and fun.
Local authorities and community groups are also being encouraged to take part in one of the highlights of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee this year - the lighting of 2,012 Beacons around the UK and the wider Commonwealth on Monday 4th June. A number of Lancashire groups are already planning to light beacons as part of the initiative and details of where they can be viewed will be released nearer the time. The lighting of beacons will be led by The Queen, who will ignite the National Beacon after a concert at the Palace and a pageant on the Thames.
Lancashire's Lord Lieutenant, The Lord Shuttleworth KCVO, said: "We would love Lancashire to be well represented in this important initiative and are urging as many local groups and organisations as possible to plan events for this unique and very special occasion".
